Kenneth can’t stay over forever, though, so he heads home to his apartment in the afternoon. With everything going on, Maurice had almost forgotten that Kenneth left Biscuit with his parents for the weekend and needed to pick her up. So they say their goodbyes for now, Kenneth reassuring Maurice that he can always call him if he needs to, and Maurice is left alone.

And the thoughts come racing back.

Maurice tries to keep himself busy, taking his mind elsewhere, watching TV or reading a book. It works for a while, but only in that moment. As soon as the episode is over or he finishes a chapter, she shows her face in his mind. No, not her, please.

Maybe seeing Kenneth’s face instead will clear the fog again. Being with him this morning was incredibly wonderful, oh, why can’t he just have every day off and be able to stay? Why can’t it be the end of the month, and he’d be able to move in now? Well, if Kenneth can’t be here physically, he can at least look at photos of him. That way he can see him in some way, and not imagine someone else.

Before their vacation, Maurice had bought a few picture frames to put some of his prints in. It’s not like anyone visits his house other than Kenneth anyways, so it doesn’t matter what he puts on display. On top of the fireplace nearby the TV is a photo he took recently of him and Kenneth at the beach. Their cheeks are brushed up against each other, smiling at the camera, and the expansive sand dune behind them is their backdrop. He brings a hand up to the glass protector, stroking his finger over Kenneth’s picture. They’re so happy together, so free, he can see just from Kenneth’s eyes how he’s so in love. Maurice smiles himself, he just wants to replay that day (and this morning) in his head again and again, trying to erase anything else that dares creeps its way in.

She did look a lot like him, though.

“No, fuck—not... not her.”

At least I only have photos of Kenneth.

But with the TV turned off, the silence invites music to play in his head. He has the album out near the stereo still from when he listened to it yesterday with Kenneth; should he play it again? Would it help, or just make it harder to forget? He couldn’t help himself yesterday, the music wouldn’t stop banging in his ears. But maybe now he can push it to the side, and listen to something else...

He walks over to his stereo, and puts The Beach Boys Today album on the turntable.

This band is Kenneth’s favorite. He listened to this before recently, just for him, to learn how to sing and play these songs on guitar. Kenneth always sings them so well since his voice fits perfectly, hitting every note with precision. Yet Maurice’s heart rate starts to quicken as each song moves forward, each track fades into the next, and a certain one with a particular name starts to spin.
